Artista dalla spiccata sensibilità, Stefania Popoli presenta un linguaggio figurativo di notevole coerenza e profondità, ancorato a codici iconografici e compositivi della grande tradizione pittorica europea. Nella sua ricerca, l'antico non appare mai come semplice repertorio da citare, ma si trasforma in chiave ermeneutica e generativa, in costante dialogo con una modernità intrisa di sospensione metafisica e animata da una sottile inquietudine visionaria.

Nel dittico Ares vs Kalos, l'artista realizza una delle sintesi più compiute e complesse del suo percorso espressivo: un paesaggio mitologico e atemporale, immerso in un silenzio visivo che si distende tra tensione ed introspezione. 

L'opera si presenta allo sguardo come un enigma e un'icona allo stesso tempo: un manifesto visivo capace di incarnare ed indagare il legame inestricabile fra distruzione e bellezza. Si impone, infatti, un dialogo significativo tra due archetipi essenziali: Ares, dio della guerra e della forza distruttrice e Kalos, incarnazione della bellezza ideale e dell'armonia. 

Un confronto che si traduce in un'opera raffinata, nella quale composizione e simbologia si fondono, facendo emergere la colta cifra stilistica di Popoli. Una dicotomia amplificata anche dallo sfondo arancione del dipinto, vibrante e quasi ipnotico, che si pone in netto contrasto con la purezza algida delle figure scultoree emergenti da acque trasparenti, quasi a  voler segnare un confine tra visibile e invisibile, tra memoria e mistero. 

Questa dualità si rivebera, inoltre, sugli elementi simbolici in primo piano, come il melograno trafitto dalla spada, emblema di una bellezza ferita e intreccio tragico di fecondità e dolore; la farfalla, fragile e fugace, evocazione dell'anima e della metamorfosi; la conchiglia, archetipo femminile e richiamo all'origine della bellezza; ed infine, il pavimento a scacchi, bianco e nero - spazio di tensione razionale e metafisica - nonché il gioiello con rubino e perla, simbolo di un'eterna dialettica tra passione e purezza eterea, tra impulso terreno e idealizzazione sublime.

Ancora una volta, Popoli non si limita a rappresentare il mito: lo reinventa, lo attraversa e lo trasfigura, proiettandolo in una dimensione estetica e psicologica fortemente contemporanea. L'opera si configura così come uno spazio mentale e sensibile, in cui lo sguardo dello spettatore è invitato a sostare e ad interrogarsi, lasciandosi trasportare tra la ricchezza dei simboli e la profondità del pensiero.

Con Ares vs Kalos, l'artista riafferma in maniera palese la propria capacità di unire rigore formale e intensità concettuale, dando forma ad una visione potente, evocativa e mai retorica.

Stefania Popoli - Ares vs Kalos: myth, beauty, and the tension of conflict 

An artist with a marked sensitivity, Stefania Popoli presents a figurative language of remarkable coherence and depth, firmly rooted in the iconographic and compositional codes of the great European painting tradition. In her work, the classical is never reduced to a mere repertoire of citations; instead, it becomes an interpretative and generative key, in constant dialogue with a modernity imbued with metaphysical suspension and animated by a subtle, visionary unease. 

In the painting Ares vs Kalos, the artist achieves one of the most accomplished and complex syntheses of her expressive path: a mythological and timeless landscape, immersed in a visual silence that unfolds between tension and introspection. The work presents itself to the viewer as both an enigma and an icon—a visual manifesto capable of embodying and exploring the inextricable bond between destruction and beauty. A meaningful dialogue emerges between two essential archetypes: Ares, god of war and destructive force, and Kalos, the embodiment of ideal beauty and harmony. This confrontation is rendered in a refined composition where symbolism and structure intertwine, revealing Popoli's cultivated stylistic signature.

A dichotomy further amplified by the vibrant, almost hypnotic orange background of the painting, which stands in stark contrast to the icy purity of the painting, which stands in stark contrast to the icy purity of the sculptural figures - emerging from transparent waters - as if marking a threshold between the visible and the invisible, between memory and mystery.
