The energy of the canvas: Isolde Mischkot Mi•CUT at the Carrousel du Louvre

Interview with artist Isolde Mischkot on the occasion of her participation in the "Art Shopping" International Contemporary Art Fair at Le Salles du Carrousel du Louvre in Paris (Stand B47)

1. To begin our conversation, could you tell us about your artistic journey? Could you share a bit more about your background and the development of your artistic practice?

My path to art was not entirely straightforward. I initially studied German language and literature as well as sports science and worked in education. However, I became increasingly fascinated by painting, and about ten years ago, I began exploring it more intensively.

My early works were still figurative. Over time, however, my interest gradually shifted towards abstraction. I experimented with collages, different materials, and three-dimensional elements, constantly discovering new ways to express my thoughts and emotions through art.

Two very different artistic movements have had a particularly strong influence on me: Abstract Expressionism, with its spontaneous, energetic approach to painting, and Pop Art, with its direct and powerful visual language. Action Painting, in particular, opened up new possibilities for me to transfer movement, emotion, and energy directly onto the canvas.

This exploration eventually led me to develop my own artistic approach, which I call Cut Action Painting or Mi•CUT. Through deliberate cuts and openings, I break through the traditional, closed surface of the canvas. For me, this intervention is not an act of destruction, but rather a way of opening up new spaces and perspectives. It symbolizes freedom, transformation, and the willingness to move beyond existing boundaries.

2. When creating your works, do you operate primarily on an internal, intuitive level, or is it a more rational process?

My works emerge from a fascinating interplay between conscious artistic decisions and intuition. I often begin with a particular idea and a specific vision of colors. Yet, during the painting process, the work frequently develops in a completely different, unexpected direction.

When I stand before a blank canvas, I sometimes have a clear image in mind. At other times, I have no idea where to begin. I simply want to paint.

Movement, chance, and spontaneous decisions play an important role in my creative process. I allow myself to be guided by the colors, their interactions, and whatever emerges on the canvas. Every new brushstroke can trigger an unexpected development and change the direction of the painting process. I respond very strongly to the colors as they unfold on the canvas.

It is a dialogue between myself and the emerging work, between control and freedom.

3. What led you to participate in this major Parisian event at the prestigious Carrousel du Louvre?

Paris is one of the world's most important art capitals. The city represents an extraordinary artistic tradition, while also embracing new ideas and forms of artistic expression.

Having the opportunity to present my works at the Carrousel du Louvre, a prestigious international exhibition venue, is both a special opportunity and a great honor for me.

In Paris, I feel particularly connected to many of the values I wish to convey through my art: emotion, joy, and optimism.

I look forward to meeting artists and art enthusiasts from different countries and cultures, discovering new perspectives, and sharing our enthusiasm for art and its beauty.

4. What are your expectations for an event of this kind?

I hope that my art will touch people emotionally in a positive way, spark their curiosity, and encourage them to explore new paths with confidence and optimism.

Especially in a world filled with uncertainty, I believe it is important to make room for joy, hope, and faith in our own potential.

I also look forward to making new international contacts and to encounters where a shared passion for art creates genuine human connections.

It brings me particular joy when a work of art becomes the starting point for a personal conversation. After all, I find it endlessly fascinating how differently the same painting can be perceived and what personal feelings and associations it can evoke.

5. The color red clearly dominates the work you will be exhibiting; could you explain the reasoning behind this choice?

For me, red is a color full of energy, life, and passion. In my painting "When Joy Begins ...", I want to express the joy of life and optimism through the interplay of intense shades of red with delicate tones of pink and white. The dynamic lines and almost floating forms convey movement, lightness, and vitality.

The painting is not intended to tell a specific story, but rather to evoke positive emotions and stimulate the viewer's imagination.

The title is deliberately open-ended. Joy can arise at any moment, sometimes quite unexpectedly – through an encounter, a special experience, or by taking a new path.

With this work, I want to invite viewers to discover their own personal sense of joy within the painting and to rediscover that joy in their own lives. I also hope the painting will encourage them to approach life with openness and confidence, again and again.
