Dalla mostra di New York al ritorno a Parigi: intervista all’artista Giampiero Murgia
di Ilaria Rippa
Intervista all'artista Giampiero Murgia in occasione della sua partecipazione alla Fiera Internazionale d'Arte Contemporanea "Art Shopping" presso Le Salles du Carrousel du Louvre a Parigi (Stand B47)

1. Ben ritrovato Giampiero!

From the New York exhibition to the return to Paris: an interview with artist Giampiero Murgia
Interview with artist Giampiero Murgia on the occasion of his participation in the "Art Shopping" International Contemporary Art Fair at Le Salles du Carrousel du Louvre in Paris (Stand B47)

1. Welcome back, Giampiero! After taking part in the international exhibition "Italy calls the World!" in New York, it is time for your third return to "Art Shopping", right in the heart of France. First times are often so charged with emotion that they risk overshadowing the very authenticity of the experience. You, on the other hand, are now a veteran of this event: how are you experiencing this return? From an artistic point of view, how do you feel different compared to your first time here?
A warm greeting to you and to all the readers! It is always a great pleasure to meet again. Returning for the third time to the Carrousel du Louvre for Art Shopping carries a sense of profound awareness and maturity for me. The first time, you are overwhelmed by the emotional impact and a almost childlike sense of disbelief at finding yourself in such a prestigious setting in the heart of Paris. Today, I experience this return with a different emotion: no longer fear or disorientation, but a focused and authentic joy.
From an artistic perspective, I feel I am a man and a painter in continuous evolution. Compared to my Parisian debut, I feel I have further refined my research, letting the brushstroke and the light flow with greater ease as I portray the complexity of the human soul.
2. Classical figures, bright colorful drapery, statues, and enveloping shadows are the protagonists of your work, Ai confini dell'essere ("At the Boundaries of Being"), on display at the Carrousel du Louvre. The figures engage in dialogue within an introspective, almost mythological dimension. Would you like to reveal the story behind this creation and its deeper meaning?
Entering the universe of this work means embarking on a journey of self-discovery. For me, the process of creating Ai confini dell'essere is equivalent to a true philosophical and ascetic journey, in which we witness an alchemical transformation and a spiritual elevation, right on the border between matter and transcendence.
It all stems from my intimate search and my motto: "Only Art can save the soul". The bright draperies and the radial play between light and shadow shape the canvas to tell the story of existence in transition: the statue represents memory and petrified matter, while the bodies and fabrics in motion embody life, transformation, and rebirth. The deepest meaning lies precisely in finding oneself on that fine line between being and beyond—a threshold where matter meets the spirit.
3. I'd love to take the opportunity during this interview to ask about something born from my own personal interpretation of your painting. Looking at the painted bodies, I get the impression that they do not all belong to the same era, appearing instead in a space where antiquity and modernity, past and present, meet. It almost seems as though you wanted to create a suspended and unprecedented moment, outside real rules, that finds life in the very existence of the artwork itself. Is that truly the case? Do you recognize your work in this interpretation?
I deeply recognize my work in your interpretation, and it is extraordinary when an observer manages to capture the invisible thread of the piece. You have hit on a fundamental aspect of my journey: the suspension of time. For me, a painting is not a photograph of the present moment, but a doorway to a dreamlike and visionary dimension.
The bodies and shapes I paint in Ai confini dell'essere draw from myth, memory, the archetype of antiquity, as well as contemporary sensibility. In art, linear time fades away: past, present, and future coexist in the same pictorial space to give life to that suspended moment where the viewer can quiet the noise of the world and listen to the echo of their own soul.
4. In shaping your stylistic identity, are there artists from the past you have looked to with particular interest and consider benchmarks for your journey?
Absolutely, yes—engaging in dialogue with the masters of art history is vital sustenance. If I think of a color and a feeling that often permeates my works, my thoughts immediately go to Marc Chagall for his poetry, the lightness of dreams, and the depth of that intense blue that feels like sky, rain, and peace.
Looking at the origins of my painting and the rendering of light, the inspiration certainly draws from Surrealism and Symbolism, but also looks with great respect upon the Impressionist masters. From them, I learned the fundamental importance of light, the continuous search to capture a vibrant atmosphere, and the delicacy with which color envelops forms. This Impressionist sensibility then merges with classical chiaroscuro and the echo of my homeland, Sardinia, with its visceral nature and evocative shades.
5. After these two major artistic milestones, are there already new projects on the horizon?
There is never a shortage of projects—creativity is my driving force. After New York and the return to Paris for Art Shopping, my gaze is already firmly set on upcoming international challenges. At the same time, as co-organizer alongside FC Art Curator Events, I will also strive to create new exhibition spaces and opportunities, both for myself and for all those artists who, like me, believe in the deep value and necessity of art in contemporary society.
Alongside painting, there is always writing, music, and poetry, which walk hand in hand with the canvas in this journey of inner unveiling. As I wrote in the lines of my poem "L'Oltre" ("The Beyond"): "Do not be afraid to fly, because only those who want to fly can live reality like a dream and turn the dream into reality..."
I will continue to work with passion to transform this artistic flight into new works and precious moments of connection with the public. Thank you for this wonderful dialogue!
