Dalla Francia a New York, nel segno della memoria: intervista a Cécile Batillat

In occasione della Mostra Internazionale "Italy calls the world" che si svolgerà a New York dal 21 giugno presso la Fridman Gallery, abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistare l'artista Cécile Batillat, selezionata per la videoesposizione e la poesia.
1. Per cominciare, racconta ai nostri lettori quando hai scoperto la tua passione e come hai capito che si trattava di un vero e proprio bisogno spirituale?
Questa passione per l'arte è sempre stata parte di me, come una sorta di rifugio. È in questa solitudine che ricarico le energie. Questo bisogno spirituale si è intensificato con la scoperta della scrittura iconografica nel 2014. Agosto è anche il mese che dedico a questo ritiro iconografico dal mondo, tra le montagne del Vercors.
2. In questa mostra a New York, esporrai le tue opere in formato digitale sul maxi-schermo della galleria. Cosa significa per te questa opportunità e quali emozioni stai provando?
È il sogno americano, come cantava Joe Dassin… e dal celebre Eldorado di Manon Lescaut alla mitica America evocata in "New York, New York" di Žizi Jeanmaire e Roland Petit…
Ma al di là di questo, è anche un potente omaggio che voglio rendere a mia nonna e a suo figlio, mio padre, che sono per sempre incarnati nel mio grande disegno a inchiostro che verrà proiettato alla Fridman Gallery.

3. Parlaci delle opere selezionate per questo evento e di ciò che speri di trasmettere attraverso di esse:
Queste tre opere fanno parte della mia terza serie, che esplora il concetto di memoria e l'impegno e l'introspezione che esso richiede all'artista. Da Capo salva (I) ha dato inizio a questa riflessione nell'ambito del "Mural of the Peace", nel settembre 2023 a Silversum, nei Paesi Bassi, presentato dal Museum of the Americas di Houston.
Poi è arrivato Da Capo salva (II) (2024), e così è nato il dittico. È stato presentato nel novembre/dicembre 2024 all'Universidad Nacional de la Matenza di Buenos Aires, in Argentina, e durante una protesta contro la guerra in Ucraina, dal dicembre 2024 al febbraio 2025, presso il Municipio di Achim, in Germania.
L'invito di Ukraf a esporre questa serie al Museo Nazionale Andrey Sheptytsky di Leopoli, in Ucraina, è stato particolarmente toccante. La mostra, ironicamente, si intitolava "Potere". Queste due opere sottolineano la distruzione collaterale e l'esilio causati dalla guerra. Nessuna parola può esprimere l'abisso di questa introspezione... come salvare ciò che è esistito fin dall'inizio, come salvare la propria mente, la propria identità, i propri pensieri, in questo mondo in bancarotta? Questo è stato il tema che ho affrontato nella mia presentazione alla mostra "Introspettiva" di Maria Di Stasio a Napoli nell'ottobre del 2025.
Questa testimonianza introspettiva è proseguita in una direzione diversa, più intima, con l'evocazione di ricordi che forgiano un legame tra generazioni. Questo tema è stato proposto dalla Galerie Mona Lisa di Parigi e intitolato "Generation Collective Creation" (Creazione Collettiva Generazionale). Per questa occasione è nata Per l'Eternità (2024). La memoria continua a vivere: contrariamente a quanto suggerisce l'immagine apparentemente congelata, l'immaginazione dell'osservatore si dispiega in parallelo… L'eco dell'haiku italiano (tradotto come: "Ecco Maria/ Tutto in apparenza—/Per l'eternità") agisce come un'onda d'urto in Per l'Eternità (2024). La realtà viene così amplificata dall'affettivo e dal simbolico.
Nel complesso, attraverso queste tre opere, desidero anche affermare una certa libertà di pensiero che ci sostiene e che dobbiamo preservare. Questo è ciò che evoco nella mia poesia "Coltiva il tuo giardino…", il cui titolo è un omaggio a Voltaire.
4. Se potessi incontrare un artista del passato e osservare le sue opere, chi vorresti incontrare?
Leonardo da Vinci. È una figura che mi affascina. La sua ricerca perpetua e ininterrotta… il suo insaziabile desiderio di Conoscenza, Bellezza e Verità mi ispirano.
La sua epoca evoca un risveglio, una rinascita. Dai suoi dipinti emanano una presenza e una vibrazione incredibili, che possiamo percepire ancora più profondamente quando ci troviamo di fronte ad essi e ci perdiamo nella loro contemplazione.

From France to New York, in the name of memory: an interview with Cécile Batillat
On the occasion of the International Exhibition "Italy Calls the World," which will take place in New York from June 21st at the Fridman Gallery, we had the pleasure of interviewing artist Cécile Batillat, selected for the video exhibition and poetry.
1. To begin, tell our readers when you discovered your passion and how you realized it was a true spiritual need?
This passion for art has always been a part of me, like a kind of refuge. It is in this solitude that I recharge. This spiritual need became more pronounced with the discovery of writing icon in 2014. August is also the month I dedicate to this iconographic retreat from the world in the Vercors mountains.
2. In this New York exhibition, you will be displaying your works digitally on the gallery's giant screen. What does this opportunity mean to you, and what emotions are you experiencing?
It's the American dream as Joe Dassin sang about it ;) ! … and from the famous Eldorado of Manon Lescaut to the mythical America evoked in "New York, New York" by Zizi Jeanmaire and Roland Petit…
But beyond that, it's also a powerful tribute I want to pay to my grandmother and her son, my father, who are forever embodied in my large ink drawing that will be projected at the Fridman Gallery.

3. Tell us about the works selected for this event and what you hope to convey through them:
These three works are part of my third series, which explores the concept of memory and the commitment and introspection it demands of the artist. Da Capo salva (I) initiated this reflection as part of the "Mural of the Peace", in September 2023 in Silversum, Netherlands, presented by the Museum of the Americas in Houston.
Then came Da Capo salva (II) (2024), and the diptych was born. It was presented in November/December 2024 at the Universidad Nacional de la Matenza in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and during a protest against the war in Ukraine from December 2024 to February 2025 at the Achim Town Hall in Germany.
The invitation from Ukraf to exhibit this series at the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv, Ukraine, was particularly moving. The exhibition was ironically titled "Power." These two works emphasize the collateral destruction and exile caused by war. No words can convey the abyss of this introspection… how to save what has existed since the beginning, how to save one's mind, one's identity, one's thoughts, in this bankrupt world? This was the theme I addressed in my presentation at Maria Di Stasio's "Introspettiva" exhibition in Naples in October 2025.
This introspective testimony continued in a different, more intimate direction, with the evocation of memories that forge a link between generations. This theme was proposed by the Galerie Mona Lisa in Paris and was titled "Generation Collective Creation". Per l'Eternità (2024) was created for this occasion. The memory lives on: contrary to what the seemingly frozen image suggests, the imagination of the observer unfolds in parallel… The echo of the Italian haiku (translated as : "Here is Mary/ All in appearance—/For Eternity.") acts like a shockwave in Per l'Eternità (2024). Reality is thus augmented by the affective and the symbolic.
Overall, through these three works, I also want to affirm a certain freedom of thought that sustains us and that we must preserve. This is what I evoke in my poem Cultivate your garden…, whose title is a nod to Voltaire.
4. If you could meet an artist from the past and observe their work, who would you like to meet?
Leonardo da Vinci. He is a figure who fascinates me. His perpetual, uninterrupted quest… his insatiable appetite for Knowledge, Beauty, and Truth inspires me.
His era evokes an awakening, a rebirth. An incredible presence and vibration emanate from his paintings, which we can feel even more deeply when we stand before them and lose ourselves in their contemplation.
